Safer Neighbourhood Officers in London are helping to clean the streets in more ways than one - by using hybrid cars on their crime-fighting patrols.
The three new Honda Civic hybrids will help the London Borough of Lambeth to reduce their CO2 emissions by as much as 290 tonnes in the cars’ expected service period.
A member of the Lambeth Safer Neighbourhood force enthused about the adoption of the Hybrid vehicles. “The provision of three hybrid cars to support the 21 Safer Neighbourhood teams across Lambeth will not only enhance the ability of the teams to tackle crime and disorder but, in reducing carbon emissions, will make Lambeth a nicer place to live, work and play.”
The Metropolitan Police recently placed Britain’s largest fleet order to date with Honda, purchasing a total of 117 Civic Hybrids to be rolled out across the safe neighbourhood schemes throughout London. Officers will use the cars to travel from their central bases to their foot patrols.
London Mayor Ken Livingston praised the police for taking the environmental initiative with the purchase of the Honda Civic Hybrids. “I am pleased that the Metropolitan Police is investing in these vehicles which are more fuel efficient, produce lower emissions and will be better for air quality in the capital,” he said. “We have to act to minimise our impact on the environment for future generations of Londoners.”
