Today Global Cool joined forces with Hollywood, Bollywood and the UK Government in an effort to launch the Indian leg of its global campaign. Star of ‘Factory Girl’ Sienna Miller, Indian cinema’s biggest star Amitabh Bachchan and Environment Secretary David Miliband came together at London’s Madame Tussauds to sign a bond between the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) and Global Cool.

The IIFA promotes Indian Cinema worldwide and, through partnering with Global Cool, will open up its audience of over 500 million people to energy reducing practices and information. India is home to a population of over 1 billion people and is currently one of the world’s most vulnerable nations to the affects of climate change.

Today’s event coincided with the launch of the IIFA Weekend, which is set to take place across Yorkshire in June 2007. This star-studded event will showcase the best in Indian cinema, music and business and will be televised to over half a billion viewers.

Speaking prior to the launch Mr Bachchan - who in 2000 was the first living Asian to be immortalised at London’s world famous waxworks (pictured) - said: “IIFA is committed to using the power of Indian Cinema to build bridges and bring people together on global issues. We are proud to join the war of People versus Global Warming, supporting Global Cool in its efforts to get all of us to live more eco-efficient lives.”

Echoing the screen legend’s sentiment, Ms Miller said that climate change is an issue that will affect everyone on the planet unless action is taken now before adding: “I hope to travel to India in April to witness first hand the affects of global warming and to see how Global Cool’s energy saving projects are developing.”

Mr Miliband, who recently waxed lyrical about Global Cool’s work at the campaign’s launch at 10 Downing Street, said at the launch: “The battle against climate change is not just an environmental issue, it’s an economic issue, it’s a social issue and it’s a security issue, but it’s also a cultural issue. And that is the significance of today’s announcement that IIFA is going green and today’s launch of the Global Cool Bond.”

The Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs concluded by saying: “I was delighted when the Prime Minister hosted the launch of Global Cool at Downing Street… and I’m delighted also therefore to say today that the launch of the bond is a really significant step forward and I think the efforts in Yorkshire will really make a difference, not just in India, not just in the UK but globally.”
