Having yesterday revealed the stellar line-up of the UK leg of July’s Live Earth concerts, event organisers today announced that the biggest show on Earth is to partner with UK climate change pressure group, I Count.
Last November, I Count – the campaigning arm of the Stop Climate Chaos coalition - helped encourage 25,000 people to march on Trafalgar Square. The huge gathering demanded Government action on the eve of climate change talks between G8 world leaders taking place the following week in Nairobi. Delivering their message loud and clear, the initiative also helped to drive through the first draft of the parliament’s long-awaited Climate Change Bill last month.
“The I Count campaign involves a growing body of organisations with a combined supporter base of 4 million in the UK, who are passionate about individual and political action on change,” said Ashok Sinha, director of Stop Climate Chaos, today.
“We are therefore enormously excited to be partnering with Live Earth and look forward to catalysing the interest and support this event will undoubtedly create into a popular mandate for Government action.”
I Count is calling on the UK government to provide action internationally to ensure that global greenhouse gas emissions are irreversibly declining by 2015. The campaign is also seeking action in delivering assistance to developing countries to adapt to climate change whilst giving access to clean energy to meet their developmental needs. Closer to home, the movement is lobbying the UK Government to introduce an annual ‘carbon budget’ as part of the Climate Change Bill that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 3% per year.
Other organisations affiliated with Live Earth include The Climate Group and Al Gore’s The Alliance for Climate Protection. Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and Oxfam will also be represented at the event that is to be staged across seven global cities on Saturday 7th July.
Registration for tickets opens at midday on Friday 13th April.
