Live Earth’s plan to power down the nation during the worldwide concerts next month has been blocked by the National Grid, according to The Sun.
The symbolic gesture – which was due to involve millions switching off their lights during the London leg of the global event – will not happen due to concerns it would disrupt supply.
“We are used to dealing with surges in demand, as it happens every day around certain TV programmes,” said a National Grid spokesperson. “But it’s very difficult to forecast exactly what would happen in terms of demand. We’d have had no idea how small or large it would be.”
The stunt, devised by Live Earth architect Al Gore, would not have been the first energy-saving event of the summer, had it gone ahead. As Global Cool reported last week, ‘Lights Out London‘ is an ambitious initiative that aims to convince Londoners to switch off lights and appliances for one hour on 21st June – the longest day of the year.
Madonna, Keane, Razorlight, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Genesis and Snow Patrol are scheduled to play Live Earth at Wembley Stadium on 7th July.
