The Global Cool Foundation, a UK registered charity (charity number: 1116673), was founded in the summer of 2006 by a group of scientists and business leaders to inspire the individual to save a planet through taking individual action in reducing their carbon footprint.
Since then, the Global Cool campaign has partnered with high-profile individuals and leading consumer brands on projects dedicated to sustainability, energy efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions worldwide.
The Global Cool campaign has been endorsed by a diverse range of individuals including Hollywood stars Sienna Miller, Josh Hartnett and Heather Graham, Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, HRH Prince Charles, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Alongside its celebrity following, Global Cool also enjoys strong corporate support. In September 2007, Global Cool teamed up with Vodafone UK on a mobile phone recycling campaign to support SolarAid, an innovative charity that harnesses solar power to deliver clean, affordable energy to those who need it most in Africa.
Our PhilosophyClimate change is happening right now. With more than 26.5 billion tonnes of CO2 emitted globally every year, and accelerating at an annual rate of 0.5 billion tonnes, we are fast approaching the climatic tipping point - the point at which our global climate becomes irreversibly unstable. The general consensus among scientists is that in 2007 we are just one decade away from this point. Only by significantly reducing global CO2 emissions now can we push this point far enough into the future to buy us time to develop a long-term solution and eventually defeat climate change.
At Global Cool, we believe this solution starts with the individual. So rather than dwell on the negative effects of climate change, Global Cool's ten-year campaign concentrates on the power of the individual to do something about it.
Visitors to globalcool.org are encouraged to fill in a MyCool workout card, Global Cool's core application for individuals to pledge to make small lifestyle changes and reduce their personal CO2 emissions. This individual pledge is then added to the Global Coolometer, which shows how we are quite literally cooling the planet.
Over the next ten years, Global Cool's positive, solutions-based campaign will give people the tools to reduce their carbon footprint and inspire others to do the same. Throughout the campaign, the Global Cool Foundation will continue to support planet saving projects that are vetted by its board of Trustees and which increase awareness of climate change and/or contribute to reduce green house gases across the globe.
By changing the choices we make, the products and services we buy and the way we behave, we will ensure businesses invest in energy-efficiency and our politicians embrace low-carbon technologies, introduce policies built on sustainability and work internationally for ambitious and binding reductions in global CO2 emissions.
One by One, Tonne by Tonne. Together, we can make a difference. Together, we will defeat climate change
